Why Austin Is One of Texas's Best Production Markets

Austin has built a reputation as one of the most production-friendly cities in the American Southwest. The combination of year-round filming weather, a deep pool of local creative talent, proximity to dramatic natural landscapes, and a fast-growing business community makes Austin a natural choice for commercial video, corporate storytelling, branded content, and large-scale event coverage.

The city's identity — shaped by the Live Music Capital of the World tagline, a thriving tech sector, a major research university, and internationally recognized events like SXSW and Austin City Limits — gives productions a distinctive energy that's hard to replicate. Brands that want to look current, human, and culturally credible increasingly look to Austin as a production base.

This guide covers the filming locations we work in most as a local Austin crew, including the types of productions each area supports, practical considerations, and what makes each one worth knowing.

Austin gives productions an energy that's hard to replicate — music, tech, outdoor living, and creative culture all in one city.

Downtown Austin & The Capitol

01
Downtown Austin

Downtown Austin offers the most versatile urban backdrop in Central Texas. The skyline along the Colorado River provides strong establishing shots for corporate productions, while Congress Avenue — anchored by the Texas State Capitol — gives commercial campaigns a sense of place and prestige that signals the heart of the state.

The area is dense with hotel and convention venues, making it the natural center for corporate event coverage, conference keynotes, and executive interview setups. The Sixth Street corridor and Rainey Street district add nightlife and lifestyle energy for brands that want something more kinetic.

South Congress Avenue

02
South Congress (SoCo)

South Congress is Austin's most iconic street and one of its most recognizable production locations. The stretch between the Capitol and Oltorf Street is lined with locally owned shops, vintage storefronts, murals, food trucks, and live music venues. It's an area that photographs with authenticity — exactly what lifestyle, retail, food, and brand content often needs.

The Congress Avenue Bridge, famous for its million-bat colony, also provides a unique architectural landmark. Early morning shoots here have exceptionally clean light before the street fills with traffic and foot traffic.

East Austin

03
East Austin

East Austin has transformed from an underserved neighborhood into one of the city's most creative production districts. Former warehouses have become art galleries, studios, breweries, and co-working spaces — all of which translate beautifully on camera. The area has an industrial-creative aesthetic that works for documentary-style productions, startup profiles, music content, and anything that wants to feel authentic and unpolished.

Many production companies and creative agencies are based here, and the area has a strong pool of local talent, locations, and production-friendly businesses.

The Domain

04
The Domain

The Domain is Austin's second downtown — a mixed-use development in north Austin anchored by luxury retail, tech campuses, hotels, and residential towers. It's home to major employers including Apple, Amazon, Indeed, and Google, which makes it a frequent location for tech product launches, recruiting videos, employer branding campaigns, and corporate profiles.

The architecture is clean and modern, with a mix of interior and exterior environments that work well for any production requiring a polished, contemporary look without a gritty or historic feel.

Moody Center & UT Austin

05
Moody Center & UT Campus

The Moody Center arena — opened in 2022 — is Austin's primary large-scale live event venue, hosting major concerts, sports events, and conferences. The surrounding UT Austin campus provides institutional architecture, green spaces, and a high-energy student environment well-suited to education brands, sports content, and event coverage.

Productions filming around large-scale events at Moody Center should coordinate with venue management early — but for brands that need scale, it's one of the strongest visual assets in the city.

The Texas Hill Country

06
Hill Country & Surrounding Region

Within 30–45 minutes of Downtown Austin, the landscape shifts dramatically — rolling cedar-covered hills, limestone outcroppings, spring-fed rivers, and open sky that gives productions a cinematic quality available almost nowhere else in Texas. Golden hour in the Hill Country is exceptional, and the combination of natural beauty and isolation makes it ideal for lifestyle campaigns, hospitality brands, automotive shoots, and any production that needs wide open space.

The towns of Dripping Springs, Wimberley, and Marble Falls all offer additional production-friendly environments within easy range of an Austin base.

Westlake & Lake Travis

07
Westlake & Lake Travis

West Austin's affluent communities along Lake Austin and Lake Travis offer upscale residential settings, lake views, and a polished natural aesthetic that suits luxury brand content, high-end real estate video, and executive interview setups. Productions requiring a private, controlled environment often work in Westlake due to the proximity of large properties with strong production access.

Round Rock, Cedar Park & Georgetown

08
North Austin Suburbs

Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Georgetown are among the fastest-growing cities in the United States, and their business ecosystems have grown accordingly. Round Rock is home to Dell Technologies' headquarters and a major professional baseball facility. Cedar Park's H-E-B Center is a regional sports and entertainment venue. Georgetown offers historic downtown architecture and courthouse square settings that are useful for productions requiring a classic Texas town aesthetic.

For productions based out of Austin, servicing these areas involves no significant travel cost — they're within 30 minutes of the city center.

Filming at Austin Events: SXSW, ACL & More

Austin's event calendar is one of the most active in the country. South by Southwest (SXSW) in March draws brands, agencies, and production companies from around the world — both for official programming coverage and for the dozens of brand activations that surround it. Austin City Limits Music Festival in October provides a major lifestyle and culture production opportunity. Austin Film Festival in October serves the film and TV industry directly.

Productions planning to film at or around these events need to plan early. Credentialing, permitting, and local crew availability can all become constrained in the weeks leading up to major events. We recommend reaching out at least 4–6 weeks in advance for event-adjacent shoots.

Permits & The Texas Film Commission

Filming on public property in Austin requires a permit through the Austin Film Commission, which is part of the City of Austin's Economic Development Department. The commission supports productions of all sizes and can assist with location scouting, permitting, and connecting with local resources.

The Texas Film Commission at the state level supports larger productions through incentive programs, including the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program (TMIIIP), which provides rebates for qualifying film, television, commercial, animation, and VFX projects produced in Texas.

For most commercial and corporate productions, a local crew with permit experience is the most efficient path — they know which locations require permits, how long approval typically takes, and how to work with city liaisons to keep your shoot on schedule.
